Chandigarh air pollution ‘More steps must, going car-free not only solution’
Chandigarh, the city with the highest per capita vehicle in the country, is all set to witness a car-free day, likely to begin later this month and proposed to be a monthly affair for now.
In a meeting held Friday 05 Feb, the UT Administration had decided to observe a car-free day once in a month, in which the use of private vehicles will be banned throughout the city from 7 am to 2 pm.
Earlier it was decided that Chandigarh to go car-free on February 28 for seven hours however the UT administration in a high-level meeting on 24th Feb decided to postpone the car-free day from February 28 to March 20. The decision was taken in consultation with the neighboring SAS Nagar and Panchkula authorities.
The move comes close on the heels of odd-even road rationing scheme launched by the Delhi government last month to curb pollution. Car-free day would be beneficial.. It is a good step and will create awareness.
