In another effort to save environment, the administration conducted a raid as part of a plastic ban by the municipal corporation, despite which local vendors continue to use polythene bags.
This raid was conducted in the markets of Sector 37 and 47 in the city on Saturday. Sadly enough, around 60 kg carry bags and plastic products were seized during this raid. This suggests that the city has not yet woken up to protect the environment.
A statement issued by the union territory administration said that seven challans of Rs. 5000 mounting to Rs. 35000 and six of Rs. 500 amounting to Rs.3000 were issued. Despite such raids and subsequent challans, some vendors continue to use polythene bags. They revert to using polybags soon after the raid. Vendors say that the customers don’t bring their own bags and don’t like carrying paper bags either as it gets damaged due to the weight of fruits and vegetables. So they don’t have an option but to use plastic bags.
In another raid, a team of the civic body seized 1.5 quintals of polythene bags and plastic items.
The administration has requested residents to come forward and abstain from using non-biodegradable plastic, help in implementing the ban and save environment. Unless residents wake up to the cause, it will be very difficult to
99Tolets also requests the tri-city residents to stop using polythene bags and help preserve the environment and contribute in keeping ‘The City Beautiful’ – beautiful.
