Announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a special address to the nation on Tuesday evening (8th Nov), Currency notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 denominations will not be legal tender beginning November 9.
ATMs will not work on November 9, and at some places on November 10 as well. The old currency notes will be accepted for railway ticket booking, air travel booking, petrol , diesel and CNG stations and International Airports for first 72 hours. New notes of Rs 500 and Rs 2,000 would be released and circulated soon. However within this period, cheques, debit cards, e-transactions will continue to work.
People holding notes of Rs. 500 and Rs. 1000 can deposit the same in their bank and post office accounts from November 10 till December 30.
Fake currencies circulation have grown over the years. Its going to be trouble for next 10-15 days for the citizens but its going to be a great move in long term for the nation.
