Gurmeet Ram Rahim Rape Trial - Tri-city all set to become a fortress

With the verdict of Gurmeet Ram Rahim rape case just 2 days away, the situation in Panchkula is already tense. Sirsa-based Dera Sacha Sauda followers started reaching the sect’s Sector-23 based Naam Charcha Ghar. Since Naam Charcha Ghar has limited capacity, people are spilling onto parks. It is expected that around 10 lakh followers will gather in Panchkula on the day of the verdict, out of which 50,000 have already arrived. The arrangements starting from food, medicines and other basic services have already been made by the followers. The sanitation however hasn’t been taken care of.

Traffic jams have already started in Sector 2 and 4. Fearing impact on schools, school management have requested the district administration to close the schools on August 25. Companies operating in Panchkula are likely to be impacted along with the workforce commuting to Chandigarh and Mohali. Sector 1 in Panchkula has already been sealed and n vehicles are being allowed in district courts complex. 2 control rooms have been set up in Panchkula by the police force.

Chandigarh has imposed Section 144 of CrPC and more than 3500 cops will be deployed in the city. In Chandigarh, sector 16 stadium will be converted into a temporary jail on August 25 to detain dera followers who arrive for the verdict.
